What You Actually Need in a Beginner Sewing Kit

You don’t need a full craft room to start mending your own things, most of what actually gets used lives in a small tin. Here’s what’s worth having, without the padding you get in a lot of “beginner kit” lists.

The essentials

  • Needles – a small mixed pack covers most fabric weights, no need to buy them individually when you’re starting out
  • Thread – a basic multicolour set, or just black, white and a couple of neutrals if you’d rather keep it simple
  • Small, sharp scissors – kept for fabric and thread only, cutting paper with them blunts the blade fast
  • Pins or fabric clips – clips are easier if you’re new to this, nothing to prick your fingers on
  • A seam ripper – for the stitches that don’t go to plan the first time, everyone needs one eventually
  • A small tape measure – the retractable kind, not a rigid ruler, so it can follow a curve

Worth adding later, not right away

Tailor’s chalk for marking fabric, a thimble if hand-sewing gives your fingers a hard time, and a proper pin cushion once loose pins in a tin start driving you mad. None of it’s essential on day one.
