More Than Just a Stitch: How sewing brought me connections

How teaching myself to sew opened the door to creativity, wellbeing, and sharing with others

My sewing journey began with a simple wish: I wanted to learn how to sew. I looked for sewing classes nearby, but finding something accessible wasn’t as easy as I’d hoped. Rather than give up, I decided to teach myself.

I turned to YouTube, watched tutorials, and learned through plenty of trial and error. I experimented, practised, and even looked at clothes in my own wardrobe, wondering how they were made and whether I could recreate them. Some things worked, others didn’t – but every attempt taught me something new.

As I learned, I discovered that sewing was about much more than making something to wear or use. It became a therapeutic space for me: a chance to slow down, focus my mind, and get lost in something creative. There’s a special feeling that comes from starting with a piece of fabric and turning it into something with your own hands. That sense of achievement, however small the project, can be incredibly rewarding.

Because I found it so difficult to access sewing classes myself, I began thinking about how I could help other people have that opportunity. I know how daunting it can feel when you’re starting from scratch, especially when you’re not sure where to begin.

That’s part of what I now enjoy about Create Connections, a peer support group I’m involved with on Wednesdays. It’s a mixed, welcoming group where everyone is encouraged to take part. I help beginners learn the first steps on a sewing machine, and as people gain confidence, I share what I know and help them develop their skills at their own pace. It isn’t a large-scale sewing course; it’s about sharing skills, trying something new, and creating a supportive space where people can learn from one another.

For me, creativity can bring people together. Sewing offers the chance to learn a practical skill, express yourself, take a little time for your own wellbeing, and experience the pride of making something yourself. You don’t have to be an expert to begin, and you don’t need to get everything right first time. Sometimes, the best way to learn is simply to give it a go.

If you’ve ever wanted to try sewing, or you’re looking for a creative activity where you can learn alongside others, I hope my story encourages you to take that first step. You might discover, as I did, that sewing gives you much more than a finished project.

Thank you for reading my story

If there’s one thing my sewing journey has taught me, it’s that you don’t have to know everything to get started. Sometimes you just need to take that first step and see where it leads. I’d love to hear about your creative journey, or even inspire you to start your own.

Keep creating, keep learning, and remember: every stitch tells a story.
With love,
Mimi Joi
